Weekend Recap (July 27-29)

We had a busy, but really fun weekend!

Friday night, Matt watched the boys and I got to go hang out with some girlfriends.  We had great food, some drinks, and played "Just Dance" on the Wii and just laughed and had a great time.  Loved it!

Saturday morning, we headed to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, where we met up with my parents, and my sister and her family.  We had a really great time, and the kids all loved it!

After the zoo, we drove to Elwood to spend some time with Matt's mom.  She was missing the boys, and it had been over a month since we'd seen her.  We took her out to Pizza Hut and visited for a while.  We headed out around 8 pm to head home.  The boys (finally) fell asleep - though they protested to being in that car for so long - and we just put them in bed when we got home.

Sunday we just hung around the house and did housework.  I emptied out the toy room, went through toys, re-arranged the furniture, and cleaned.  It felt good to finally cross that off my list!  Matt cleaned the bathroom and did some laundry.  I cleaned out our vehicles (they were G-R-O-S-S!).

It was a good weekend.  I only work three days this week, and I'm off to Colorado Springs to spend the weekend with my best friend!  Woo hoo!  (I'm going to miss those boys like crazy though...)

Here are some pictures from our weekend.

Rylee and Hendrix in the safari truck.

Daddy and Jamers.

How big does my baby look?  He's growing so fast!

In the tee-pee tents.

Granny and Grandfather with their kiddos!

In the dinosaur eggs. (Turns out it's almost impossible to get three kids, ages 8, 2.5, and 1 to look at the camera at the same time!)

At age 2.5, he still just squints his face up when you ask him to smile for pictures.  Silly boy!

Jameson was "driving" our log! He thought he was big stuff.

Dad and Rylee.  This was some kind of woolly mammoth skeleton, but it looked like that of an elephant.  If you know my dad, you know he's obsessed with elephants. :)  He and Ry had to cheese in front of it!

The gross old dog bed is the first place you need to look if you ever find it eerily quiet and can't see Jameson.  Silly kid always heads back there.  Busted, mister!

An Experiment: UPDATE

Remember, back in April, when I decided to see if doing an experiement would help me reach a weight goal?

Guess what?

I REACHED IT!!!!!!!!!

I stepped on the scale on my lunch break today, and had to blink, squint, and double check what I was seeing.  Yup, sure as heck saw 130 on that scale!  Woo hoo!!!

The number "130" is not a number that I would have ever thought I'd set as a goal for myself, let alone actually try (and succeed) to reach it.  Wow.  Healthy eating and exercise does really pay off, I guess!

Upcoming Challenges - Yikes!

So, if you've been following my blog for any length of time, you know that I'm making every effort to me more concious of what goes into my body and eat healthier, along with staying active and exercising.  I've failed, as expected, at times, and eating less-than-healthy foods.  But overall, I've done pretty well, and with the right inspirations, get re-motivated every day!

That being said, I've got two events coming up in the next couple weeks that are going to challenge me on my healthy-lifestyle quest, and I'm trying not to stress about them.  (Anyone else feel that writing/blogging about what's on your mind puts your mind at ease!?)

1) Girls night: Friday, July 27th

I'm REALLY looking forward to this night!  My group of friends gets together about once a month (though it's been a lot longer than that this time around, for whatever reason) to hang out, socialize, eat, drink, and enjoy adult company away from our kiddos!  For this get-together, we're having a beach-themed party at my friend Jeanna's parents-in-law's pond.  Jeanna is pulling a couple campers up to the pond so we have electricity and a place to crash if necessary, and everyone is going to bring a snack or two, and we're going to swim, dance, and have fun.  How great, right??

I'm anxious about all the (unhealthy) food that's going to be there, and I'm guilty of bringing one of the unhealthy options!  Gahhhh!  I offered to bring my Buffalo Chicken Dip because it's always a hit, and it's sooooo darn delicious!  I bought groceries for it today, and I bought fat free cream cheese, and fat free cheddar cheese, so hopefully that will take the calorie count down a bit.  I don't want to deprive everyone of this delicious snack, so I'm still going to bring it, I just have to strictly limit myself to one small helping of it.

I also said I'd try to make sugar cookies, but I'm not going to have time for that, and want to go with something healthier anyway!  I'm thinking about doing mini-fruit pizzas on rice cakes, inspired by my newest favorite website:  Either that or fruit salad, something healthy, for sure!  I think if I counter-balance my fatty buffalo chicken dip with a healthy fruit dish, I'll feel better about it.  I still have to eat everything in moderation, however, and that will be challenging, because there is going to be a lot of delicious food there!

2) Trip to Colorado Springs, CO:  Thursday Aug 2 - Sunday Aug 5

So, in discussing the trip with my best friend, who I'm going to visit, we'd previously decided to say "To Heck with our diets for that weekend, it's such a rare occasion, we're going to eat what we want!"

I was on board with that train of thought, but now I know I've got to stay focused and stay strong.  I'm not going to just deny everything delicious that comes my way, because it's always my goal to put people before food, but I've got to seriously limit the amount of junk I consume!  I've got to make sure I drink my water each day, and keep popping gum so that I don't nibble the whole time I'm there. Hopefully her 20 month old, M (as we shall call her), will keep us busy enough that there won't be time to sit around and eat!

We are going out to eat on my last evening there at a restaurant called Rockbottom.  In our house, we rarely go out to eat.  We like to eat at home and save money, but eating out is actually one of my favorite things to do!  I'm going to scour the menu over the next week, decide what healthy option I want, and stick to my guns in ordering it.  Gotta save calories in food for a drink or two anyway, right? :)

So there you have it.  I'm really motivated to stay on my healthy-eating plan right now, but I go through slumps and periods of HIGH temptation quite often, and I know I'll go through at least one of them before or during these events.  But, I stepped on the scale on my lunch break today and saw a new low number - my lowest since high school!  This is too exciting!  I've got to keep this up, and I just might meet my goal!

Rants and Ramblings

Weekend Recap post is in the works.....In the mean time, enjoy some of my random thoughts! :D

1) My new favorite website is  Taralynn McNitt is a huge inspiration to me and my healthy living goals.  Every time I get into a slump, or want to give up on this healthy-eating thing, I just read her biography, or look at her pictures, and I'm motivated all over again.  She's just the cutest thing, too!

2) I've had coffee two times in the last week.  What's going on with me?  I never drink coffee.

3) We are going to the Fort Wayne Zoo on Saturday with my parents, my sister, and my niece.  I'm so excited to see my family, and watch the boys enjoy seeing the animals (Jameson's obsession right now!).  After the zoo, we're going to Elwood to see Matt's mom.  Should be a very busy, but FUN day!

4) I discovered Pandora radio this past week.  I seriously don't know why it took me so long to figure out the amazing-ness that is Pandora!  I really dig the 50's rock-n-roll station!

5) I started my Christmas shopping last week!  I ordered four gifts on Amazon.  My goal is to be done shopping/wrapping/everything by Thanksgiving.  I also want to make a few handmade gifts this year, too.  I think a trip to Hobby Lobby/Michael's is in order soon!

6) Speaking of Christmas, I'm planning on having a ladies only/no kids Cookie Exchange party this holiday season.  The planning is already in the works and I think it's just going to be the funnest thing!

7) I realized the other day that college football is going to start here in just a few weeks.  YAY!!  I've decided that we're going to start being Ohio State fans.  Haha!

8) I tried drying/dehydrating some strawberries last night (idea brought to you by Pinterest), and it did NOT work.  They are a gooey, gross mess.  That was a waste of a whole container of berries.  Grr.

9) In about a week and a half, I'm hopping on a plane and heading to Colorado Springs to see my cousin/BFF for a weekend (for our birthdays).  We're going to Pike's Peak, and going to just hang out and relax.  I also get to meet her 20 month old daughter for the first time.  I'm so excited!

10) I think I may buy a food dehydrator with my birthday money this year.  Mmm, apple and sweet potato, and zucchini chips, oh my!

Fitness 2012: Week 29 (July 15 - 21)

I've plateaued with my weight.  I can't seem to get below 133 right now.  I'm not upset with this number at all, I'd just really love to get to 130, but my self-control with food has been almost non-existent for the past few days.  Hmmm.

My Life....In Pictures

It's baaaack!!  I've been absent lately from the "My Life...In Pictures" posts.  I've been trying to follow the photo prompts from @fatmumslim, but can't seem to keep up with them, so I've decided to just take pictures of whatever strikes me, and use that instead.  I didn't get every day this past week, but 4 out of 7 isn't too bad, right?

Tues 7/17:  Healthy food for work

Thurs 7/19: (out of order, I know)  The stormy western sky over the Maumee River on my way to work (love how you can see the sun/shadow on the bridge, but the sky behind it is so menacing!).

Weds 7/20:  Baklava from the Middle-Eastern Market - yummmmmmmmmmm.  (I can't add enough m's to this to adequately describe it's deliciousness.)

Fri 7/20:  My crazy disorganized desk.  Ugh, it drives me crazy, but I can't find the time while at work to clean and organize it.  Blah.

Weekend Goals (July 20-22)

It's always entertaining, on Sunday night or Monday morning, to examine my goals and see how many of them actually got accomplished.  Ha!  Seems like the kids or the couch tend to take priority more often than not. :)

Our house has slowly been getting cluttered up, and it's starting to really drive me crazy.  My goal this weekend is de-cluttering and re-organizing our home.  I'm planning on having a rummage/garage/yard sale (whatever you call it) in the next month or so, so now's the time to get RID of all our junk.

The tentative plan (because plans are always tentative, right?) is to go through the attic and the kids' toyroom tonight.  Tomorrow, I'd like to go through our bedroom and the kids' room.  After that, it's the kitchen (<---yuck), then living room and bathroom, then dining room bookshelf last.  Honestly, I probably won't get past the kitchen, if I even get THAT far!!

I want to buy totes and containers and make picture labels for everything.  That way, my husband and kids have no excuse to put something out of its place!!  (Yeah right....)  I'd love my fridge and pantry to look like this when I'm all done.  I seriously drool over those pictures!

Ok, so I'll be back on Sunday or Monday (hopefully) with an update, and we'll all laugh at how not even half of these goals got accomplished because I chose, instead, to sit on the front porch with a glass of wine, or take the kids to the park, or watch a movie with Matt. :)  Meh, life's short, right?

Weekend Recap (July 13-16)

We spent this weekend camping again! Here are some pictures from our trip.

The giant inflatable "rock wall" and slide.  That little blond head in the middle is my Hendrix!

Jameson playing on the beach.....he may or may not have eaten a bit of sand.  Gross.

What I called "The Circle of Intimacy."  We were all huddled under the canopy to avoid the hot sun!

Looks like we were camping in the desert!

Playground time!

Oops....not sure why this is here twice...

Hendrix went down the waterslide at the pool and smacked his eye on the side of it.  Poor boy.  A twist ice cream cone made it all better though.

Again, not sure why this is here twice, but this is Jameson and his friend, Colt.

Someone is sleepy!

May have left this guy in the fire too long!

Strawberry Camp Pie.  Yummo.

I just love campfires.

Jameson had his tubes put in his ears on Monday.  Little guy did pretty well.  Here he is in his hospital gown and pants.  So stinking cute!

Poor baby felt so out of whack afterwards from the anesthesia.

Finally got him to eat something when we got home.  Then he took a good nap and was back to his normal self after that.

It was a very enjoyable weekend.  I have some goals to accomplish this week, and hope to be able to do a lot of relaxing this coming weekend!  Hope you all have a great week.

Fitness 2012: Week 28 (July 8 - 14)

Didn't get in any cross training this week, but did get in two longer runs, so I'm semi-happy.  My eating kind of got off track this weekend though.....

Sunday 8 July

I planned to run three miles, but felt good so I kept going.  Yay me!

Merging my needs for healthy and organized...

I've recently - in my quest to live a healthier lifestyle - really started to follow Taralynn McNitt.  She has a website at and she can be followed on Twitter: @Taralynnstweets.

Check out these pictures of her fridge and cupboards.  It almost hurts to look at these pictures while at work because I want nothing more than to go home, empty out the entire kitchen, and re-organize everything in little cute baskets!!

We are camping this weekend, but hopefully next weekend, I can transform my fridge and pantry into something resembling these photos!

Happy Runiversary to me!

It was a year ago that I decided to try the Couch25k program.  I'd never been a runner.  I'd dabbled in it previously, I'd tried it a few times, and never stuck with it.  But, having a three week old baby and weighing in at 151 lbs, I knew it was time to make a change.

One year later, I'm still running!  I still love it!  There are a ton of ways to burn calories, but I never feel as "satisfied" with a workout as I do after I go for a run, even though other exercises burn MORE cals than a run.

In the past year, I:
* started the c25k program July 2011
* ran my first race - ever (Race for Recovery in October 2011)
* ran my second 5k with a runner friend of mine (Holiday Hustle in November 2011)
* began half-marathon training
* injured my knee, took almost 2 months off running
* went into the Half thinking I was going to die
* ran 12.1 of the 13.1 miles of the half marathon in 2:17 <---- KILLED IT!
* lost 20 pounds
* am currently starting to build mileage back up for the Race for Recovery again this year - but 10k
    style this time!

Running makes me feel so good, both mentally and physically.  I sleep so much better at night now (now that I have two kids who also sleep all night!), I'm more motivated to make healthy food choices when I'm running, I'm at my best weight since about my freshman year in high school, and the endorphins really boost my mood if I'm down.

I'm so glad I stuck with it, and hope to stick with it for years to come!

Fitness 2012: Week 27 (July 1 - July 7)

Sunday 1 July
REST - spent 6.5 hours at church, and temps were soaring again. :(

Monday 2 July
30 minutes on elliptical over my lunch break

Tuesday 3 July
30 minutes on elliptical over my lunch break

Wednesday 4 July

Thursday 5 July
30 minutes on elliptical

Friday 6 July
REST day (ran errands on lunch break instead of working out)

Saturday 7 July
3.21 mile run
I really wanted to run at least 4 miles Saturday, but it was about 85 degrees at 6:30 AM this day - I'm not even halfway joking.  I could barely breathe, so I stopped at a 5k.  This miserable weather has put a huge damper on my running and my shoes are ready to get back out there pounding the pavement and racking up the miles.  I've got a 10k to train for!! (3 months away, but that's ok!)

Miles for the week: 3.21
Miles for July: 3.21
Miles for 2012: 176.25

My Life, in Pictures.....will be returning soon!

I used to do "My Life, in Pictures" posts weekly, and I've just realized that I haven't done one of those in a long time.  I'll try to get back on that!

Here's a picture for today.....this clock has never moved more slowly, I swear.  I want to be anywhere but here at my desk, and I feel like 5 pm will never arrive!  Argh.

Friday, July 6, 2012

If you don't hear from me after today.....

It's because we all died of heat stroke.

We were asked to camp in the overnight spot of our babysitter's seasonal campground this weekend.  I'm in love with camping, and Matt thought it was a nice, cheap, weekend plan, so we agreed.

I checked the forecast today and tomorrow's high temperature (actual temp, not heat index) is 101.  Ohmygoodnesswearecrazy.

I'm thinking up ways to install our window A/C unit in the camper, but not convinced I'll have time to do it before we camp tomorrow.

Not even 100% sure we'll be camping since it's so hellishly hot out.  But that's the tentative plan for right now.

Rants and Ramblings

1)  I REALLY need to update the picture on my blog.  I mean, it was taken over a year ago now.  Geesh.

2) Being frugal because you want to be and because you love scoring a good deal is fun.  Being frugal because you have to be in order to pay off a stupid amount of credit card debt is not so fun.

3) Don't you hate it how you swear you won't let people's negative attitudes affect your mood?  Then, no matter how hard you try to ignore their negativity, you find yourself grumbling and in less than super spirits?  Grr.

4) Super excited for our camping trip next weekend!

5) The other night we were taking a walk to the trails.  As we went over the bridge, Hendrix says, "There's the 'Mommy and Daddy' river! (the Maumee river)"  Doesn't my kid just say the cutest things?

6) Dieting and exercising to lose and/or maintain weight isn't enjoyable!  Do you know how badly I want a giant cheeseburger and deep fried fries right now?????

7) Our neighbor across the street addressed and spoke to my husband for the first time last night in the three years we've lived in our house.  Recluse.

8) Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds are my new favorite snack and perhaps obsession.  You HAVE to try them.  But don't blame me if you eat half the canister in one sitting.

9) Facebook is becoming more and more annoying to me as the days pass. I somewhat enjoy Twitter.

10) I MUST find a way to start my own somewhat successful business.

Fitness 2012: Week 26 (June 24 - 30)

Before we start on the workouts, did you see what week number this is?  Week 26.  That means that 2012 is half over already.  Is that blowing anyone else's mind?  Sheeeesh!

Ok, down to business...

Sunday June 24 (Happy 1st birthday, Jamers!)
3.31 mile run, pace somewhere around 9:05

Monday June 25
30 minutes on elliptical at work

Tuesday June 26
4.1 mile run at a 9:15 average pace

I'm starting to increase my mileage a bit now, and go for a run longer than a 5k at least once a week because I reminded myself that I want to run the Race for Recovery again in October, and I want to do the 10k instead of the 5k!

Wednesday June 27
REST DAY (I moved many files in our file room at work, so this burned a few calories, I'm sure!)

Thursday June 28
30 minutes on elliptical at work ~ 400 calories burned
The original plan for this day was at least a 5k in the evening.  But with a heat index of 108, I decided to opt for the air conditioning!

Friday June 29
20 minutes on the elliptical at work ~ 200 calories burned

Saturday June 30
REST DAY - used this rare opportunity to sleep past 7 am.

I would really like to see a 40 mile month for July, but there is no way that's going to happen if these scorching temperatures don't let up.  The past two weeks have been in the upper 90's with triple digit heat indexes.  Too hot to safely run!

Miles for the week: 7.41
Miles for June: 27.15
Miles for 2012: 173.05

Weekend Recap (June 29 - July 1)

It's almost time to start my next weekend recap, so I suppose I should get this last one posted, huh?

Friday evening, I did our grocery/meat market run right after work so that I wouldn't have to spend my Saturday  morning running errands.  I got home around 7 pm.  Matt went back to a store around 8:30 to finish up some work he needed to do when the store was less busy.  I enjoyed a glass of wine and my new favorite snack, Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds, on the front porch with my Kindle.

After that, I went to bed around 10 pm.  Yup, that was my super-exciting Friday night.  I'm so old.  Ha!

Saturday morning, I was able to sleep until 7:20, which is late for me!  Saturday was supposed to be a big productive day, where we were going to go room by room and purge the house of all the junk we have amassed over the last couple years.  Well......we pretty much didn't do anything all day other than play with the boys and enjoy our family time!

I purchased a food processor (one that actually works after purchasing two others that wouldn't turn on right out of the box) and made myself some hummus.  Yummmmmy!

Hendrix and I walked down to the park and after he tried to go down the big twisty slide that had been in the sun all morning and was scorching hot, and he burned his leg and ended up standing up at the top of the slide screaming, I decided to stop by the old-fashioned candy store on the way back home and get him a little treat.  I got him some blue raspberry gummies and got myself some Maple Nut Goodies.  Anyone else in love with these delicious treats?

Matt's friend Jack gave Hendrix a giant tote of Legos from his sons (who are now teenagers) and we dove into these after lunch on Saturday, since it was so hot outside.  Wow, they were a hit!  We all four sat and built fun things for a good hour together!

We got a sitter for the boys for a couple hours on Saturday evening and Matt and I walked downtown (about 2 blocks - ha!) to a restaurant called LaRoe's.  We first stopped into a book store we'd been wanting to check out for a while, though.  Very cool.  It's half book store, half art gallery.  Check it out:

(The price tag on this tiger is $45,000!)

(I loved this piece, but it wasn't for sale.  Not that I'd be able to afford it anyway!)

We love LaRoe's, and don't go there nearly enough.  It's a bit pricey, but their patio is to die for.  This is the view of the river from our table.  So pretty and peaceful!

This is the patio.  Wouldn't you just love to sit and sip some wine here?  Yeah, we love it too.

Matt and I both enjoy craft beers and micro-brews, and don't have a taste for your average domestic light beers.  (Bleck.)  So we both ordered the "Flight of Beers," and it was great!  It looks like a ton of beer, but it's only 24 ounces (equal to 2-12 oz bottles of beer) and cost $6.95, which is a good price, since they're all micros and craft beers.

Sunday was another day of relaxation.  I played the keyboard for church, and we just relaxed and grilled on Sunday evening, as has become our tradition.

It was a relaly nice and relaxing weekend.  Hoping to repeat, starting in about 30 hours! :)
