Rants and Ramblings

Welcome to this week's edition of the random - and often un-related - thoughts running around in my head!!!

* I just love short work weeks.  It's already Thursday!

* Matt is working this weekend, so we are going to set up our tent inside (it's supposed to be in the 50's and rainy) and let the boys play in it.  I'm hoping it occupies them for hours so  I can continue with my "Great Clean, Purge, and Re-Org of 2013!"  Also hope to do some sewing this weekend!

* Next weekend, we plan to go up and visit Matt's grandparents in northern South Dakota.  They live on a farm, and I'm hoping the boys can enjoy seeing the farm and playing outdoors.

* I have fallen way behind on May's #photoaday challenge.  Not sure if I'll catch up.

* I'm doing "diabetic education" this evening for daycare.  REALLY hoping that we can get these lunchtime high numbers under control!

* Look how adorable these little containers are!  I got a package of 8 of them for a whopping $1 at the dollar store the other day.  They are perfect for holding a 1 oz serving of almonds, or a 2 Tbsp serving of dip, peanut butter, salad dressing, anything!  A stack of three of them is just the size of my ice-age work phone.  Love them!

* There are only 6 weeks separating me from a long weekend with my family!  Ahh I can't wait!
* I learned how to calculate my Base Metabolic Rate today.  Ready to do math?
[9.99 x weight in kg] + [6.25 x height in cm] - [4.92 x age in years] - 161
My BMR is 1,288.  From what I understand, that's the number of calories my body burns at rest.  I assume it's in a 24 hour period?  How fun is that?
* MY mom has been sending me pictures of me as a child all day and I've been enjoying them so much.  It's absolutely crazy how much Jameson looks like I did as a baby/toddler.
Ok - I hope everyone has a fabulous Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Personal Challenge - May Recap

Yet another month floats away into oblivion.  It's crazy!

So, you may remember the personal challenge that I issued to myself for the month of May.

This is going to be short and sweet:  bottom line is that it's not other people who drive me crazy, it's me who lets little things fester and turn into big things.

I've been working hard this month to let things go and just move on with life.  I've learned a lot about myself, and I've realized how much of what my husband does for our family that I take for granted.

I'm married to a wonderful man, and I intend to cherish our marriage, and not let my own pet peeves get in the way of our relationship.

Hope you've all had a great month.

Any ideas of how you'll challenge yourself for June?

I've got an idea stirring.  Stay tuned!

Colorado Springs Weekend - Memorial Day 2013

Well, we survived the long drive too and from Colorado Springs, and had a great time while we were there!
As planned, we didn't do much of anything, and just enjoyed each other's company and let the kids play together.  It was great!
Saturday morning, we played outside with sidewalk chalk and bubbles.  After nap on Saturday, we let Hendrix and Mikaela run through the sprinklers.  Jameson wasn't all too interested in getting wet. :) Tim cooked us ribeye steaks for dinner with corn on the cob and it was so tasty!
Sunday morning, we went to the park, then planted garden boxes when we got back - before lunch time, because the temps were heating up quickly!  After naptime on Sunday, we painted a bit, then good friends of Sarah and Tim came over for dinner - burgers and dogs.  Mmmm!
Both nights we celebrated with delicious ice cream sundaes after dinner.  Ahhhmazing. :)
We were on the road at 5:57 am on Monday morning, and home just before 2.
Let me tell you, once you venture off the interstate in Wyoming and South Dakota, it becomes very interesting.  The best word I can think of to describe it is "wilderness."  It actually made me a little uneasy.  I'm talking, 50 or 60 miles straight where you don't even see a house.  No power lines, just cows dotting the hillside.  It was a gorgeous drive, just far from civilization.  Definitely an experience.
So as you can see, it was fairly uneventful, and that was just how we hoped it would be!  The photos are pretty grainy, and I'm not sure why, but they're still adorable!  Enjoy.

Thanks, Sarah, for the cool new Batman figures!

I know, you're dying. Sweetest tushies ever.

Fitness 2013: May 19-25

Sunday May 19: REST

Monday May 20: 3.65 miles

400 calories burned --- run was terrible.  I didn't get "in my running zone" until after the 2nd mile was completed.  I hate running when my legs feel like they weigh 100 pounds each.

Tuesday May 21: 2.15 miles on treadmill, 10 minutes elliptical

430 calories burned --- I started my run "in the zone" and felt great.  Then, at about 17 minutes, my left knee started to hurt.  I thought I would just push through the run and make it.  By minute 18 I could see that wasn't going to happen.  I ran to 20 minutes, then moved to the elliptical.  Hated to cut a run short, but for the next couple days, I would focus on cross-training and muscle work in my legs to hopefully strengthen my knee.  I've dealt with runner's knee before, and it was NOT fun.  That's exactly what my knee felt like today.

Wednesday May 22: 30 minutes on elliptical + abs and knee-strengthening exercises

Thursday May 23: 30 minutes on elliptical + abs and knee-strengthening exercises

Friday May 24: 3.60 miles

Legs felt like tree trunks again, but had no knee pain (perhaps was the use of the huge knee brace, but hey - whatever works)!!

Saturday May 25: 30 minutes on the elliptical made for midgets at Sarah's house. :)

That little thing made my calves hurt worse than death for days!!

Miles for the week: 9.40
Miles for May: 38.42
Miles for 2013: 193.66

I can't wait to get back into a house....apartment living is NOT cool anymore.

4 days until our "getaway!"

I have briefly mentioned that the boys and I will be heading out of town this weekend. (Matt chose to stay here.) We are so excited!
We are travelling down to Colorado Springs to spend the holiday weekend with my best friend (who is actually my cousin, but I consider her BFF first, cousin second!), her daughter, and her husband.
Previously, we had only been seeing each other once a year, if that, due to the distance and the cost of flights.  Now that we live in western South Dakota, Colorado Springs is less than 8 hours away by car!
I'm leaving work at 11:30 on Friday, picking up the boys, and we are heading south!
There will be a full recap of the weekend, of course, but the things I hope to accomplish are:
1) Relaxation with my bestie!
2) To let Hendrix and Jameson play with their cousin, Mikaela.  They've never met each other!
3) Play outside and enjoy the sunshine.
4) Eat yummy food!
5) Enjoy yummy wine!
6) Get in a couple good workouts with my best - who is now also living a healthy lifestyle - yay!
7) Eat froyo!  (Can you believe she's never had froyo???)
8) Enjoy some girl time / girl talk after the kiddies go to bed.
I haven't had any kind of vacation or getaway in a long time, so I am quite looking forward to this weekend!

Remember that "new addition?"

Remember last weekend, when I mentioned the "new addition" to our porch? Without further adieu, I present to you:

Isn't he gorgeous?
We had a charcoal grill in Ohio, but it was in sad shape from heavy use, and we threw it away before we moved.  We aren't able to use a charcoal grill per the rules of our apartment complex, so we purchased a gas grill this past week.  It's certainly nothing fancy, and only cost $150, including a new propane tank.
But it works!  We were going through grilled-food withdrawal, no joke.  We considered steak and grilled chicken, but ended up settling on some classic burgers and dogs - our favorite.
We seasoned each burger to our liking.  I had been dreaming of my burger all week long, and this is why:
Hot sauce, garlic, a bit of chili pepper, a dash of cumin, and delicious bleu cheese crumbles.  Once it was cooked, I smothered it in a mixture of hot sauce and ranch dressing and topped it with a slice of pepperjack cheese and enjoyed it on a whole wheat bun.  Holy delicious!
Matt's was similar to mine, but without the hot sauce.
For the boys, I just seasoned theirs with garlic and seasoned salt, and put shredded cheddar in the burger.  They were more about the hot dogs though.:)

Hendrix made a couple new friends this weekend.  They are a brother and sister that live a floor below us, across the hall.  Talin, the brother, is 7 and Savannah is 5.  They seem like pretty good kids, and they played together while I cooked the food and Matt made pasta salad.

Drool.  Stomach growling.

Sizzle, sizzle.

Momma's special grilling drink. :)  We decided to venture out of our normal routine this weekend and make margaritas.  Either we are old or just boring, but we could barely drink them.  We are definitely not liquor people!

Mmmmmm.  My spicy patty of deliciousness topped with the hot sauce/ranch, lettuce, and generous amounts of white onion.

Matt made the pasta salad and it was seriously the best I've ever eaten!  I'm not 100% sure what he put in it, but I know it included mayo, ranch, dill weed, and bacon.  It was awesome.

I will be out of town this coming weekend, but I see Grilliam becoming our new weekend companion for the remainder of summer!

Fitness 2013: May 12-18

Sunday May 12: Rest

Monday May 13: 30 minutes elliptical + abs and knee-strengthening exercises

Tuesday May 14: 3.60 miles (t) - I was NOT feeling the run this morning!  Did it anyway.  Boom.

Wednesday May 15: 10 minutes elliptical, 1.0 miles on the bike, 20 minutes weights/abs

Thursday May 16: 3.62 miles + abs and weight work
502 calories burned!  BOOM!

Friday May 17: 30 minutes on the elliptical + ab work
400 calories burned

Saturday May 18: 1,000 jumping jacks <-- These were done over the course of about 90 minutes, 100 at a time.  I needed to put a couple hours in at work to make up for the time I'll be missing on Friday, so didn't get a run in this Saturday.  I burned 300 calories doing the jumping jacks, which is less than I would have burned getting a run in, but 300 is better than 0!

Miles for the week: 7.22
Miles for May: 29.02
Miles for 2013: 184.26

Rants & Ramblings

It's been soooo long since I've done a R&R post!  Whoa!

Things got crazy with the D-diagnosis, the move, the new job, etc.  Guess it slipped my always-busy mind!

But anyhoo, here's what's on my mind today:

1) I can't believe it's almost June.  We've lived in SD for almost 5 months, though it doesn't feel like we've been here that long.  Warm temps are finally upon us.  Heck, I noticed this morning that the cover has been taken off the pool at our apartment.  Woo hoo!!

2) Yesterday would have been my father-in-law's 62nd birthday.  Next week on Wednesday marks 1 year from his passing.

3) If given the opportunity, I feel that I could fall asleep right now (12:20 pm MST) and not wake up until my 6 am workout tomorrow.  So. Pooped.

4) We purchased a gas grill last night.  Nothing fancy, but we couldn't take not having one anymore.  Must grill up some deliciousness.  This weekend's fare:  burgers with corn on the cob and grilled chicken and asparagus with pasta salad and deviled eggs.  Helloooooo, summer.

5) The reason for all that fancy food and grill mentioned above?  We are celebrating Matt's birthday this weekend, because the boys and I will be out of town next weekend.

6) I am packing up my adorable little men and the three of us are heading down to Colorado Springs next Friday to see Sarah, Tim, and Mikeala!  So excited!

7) Not nearly enough craftiness has been taking place in my life lately.  Some of the things I want to do/make are: shower curtain and matching bath mat, handmade Christmas gifts, organize spaces in our apartment with the use of vinyl labeling, make birthday and anniversary cards, and much more!

8) Hendrix has started making friends with the other boys that live in our apartment complex.  I love that he is such a social butterfly, but his "favorite" friend right now is Nikolai, who is 9.  Nik is a great kid - I've talked to him many times and he uses awesome manners, is ridiculously nice and friendly, and - as of yet - has not set any bad example for Hendrix.  But my concern is that a 3-ish year old boy tried to play with Hendrix on the playground last evening, and Hendrix basically ignored him to run off and play with Nikolai.  Hmmm....

9) I walked out of the house without my phone this morning.  I seriously don't understand how we lived without smart phones 5-10 years ago.  Hmph.

10) I bought a couple dresses and four pairs of shoes/sandals at Goodwill a few weeks ago.  I love scoring great deals, and I am about as non-material as you can get, so I could give a crap less if I'm wearing 2nd hand clothes.  But my FAVORITE part about it is that I've gotten more compliments in the past week about my cute dresses and cute shoes than I've gotten in the last few months on my retail wardrobe.  No one has a clue I spent about 50 cents on each pair of shoes and about $2 on each dress.  And they have no need to know.  When asked "Oh, did you get new shoes?  They're cute!" my response is usually, "Nah, I've had these in the closet for a while, just haven't worn them."  Wink.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!!!!

May Personal Challenge: Mid-Month Update

Is it really the middle of May already?  Not going to lie - I'm totally loving the warmer temps and the color green!  I'm just in disbelief that Mother's Day has come and gone, and we're facing June already.  June is summer-for-real!!

So, you may remember at the end of April, I posted my personal challenge for the month of May.  It wasn't exactly "measurable" in an objective manner, but I promised to be honest, so here it goes.

I have actually found this challenge to be easier than expected.  I've learned that most of my irritations are a result of my pet peeves and my *slight* obsessive-compulsive tendencies (that was sarcasm, if you couldn't tell!), and not the fault of my husband.  That being said, I've found myself gritting my teeth, turning away for a quick eye-roll, simply because I haven't made an effort to change what bugs me, just how I react to it.  BUT, the negativity has stopped there!  After I get done gritting my teeth or rolling my eyes, that's the end of it.

There have been less arguments in the past couple weeks.  There have been more smiles.  There have been good conversations.  That's one thing I love most about my husband - the conversations we have, about politics, religion, annoyances in the workplace, anything!

Overall, I think I've done a great job at just taking a deep breath, and letting little annoyances go.  I constantly remind myself that it really is no big deal.  I change the subject to distract myself.  I make myself smile, which actually helps a lot.

I'm happy with how I've done with this challenge, and am excited to continue "letting things go!"

How have you challenged yourself this month?

Mother's Day Weekend

I hope all the momma's out there got their sufficient fill of rest and relaxation, and were able to take a little time for themselves and do what makes them happy!
We had a pretty darn good weekend, if I do say so.  Friday evening was pretty low key.
Saturday morning, I got up at 5:45, drove downtown, and ran 6 miles!  It felt great, and I was back home before 7:30 am, which was amazing.
Once everyone had eaten breakfast and I was working on my first cup of coffee, we got down to business really early with cleaning the house.  We got a babysitter for Saturday evening, and - regardless of who it is - my house must be clean if someone comes over.  Matt and Hendrix went to get haircuts, and I did dishes, cleaned up the kitchen, did massive amounts of laundry, changed all the sheets on all the beds, and had Jameson help me pick up all the toys in the boys' bedroom.
After Matt and Hendrix got back home, the laundry and cleaning madness continued until we were in pretty darn good shape!  We played outside for a little bit, then I finally made my way to the shower to get ready for Matt and I's date!  I love exercising and getting sweaty, but I also love being a huge girl, doing my hair and make-up.  I also - like many other girls out there - love taking selfies.  Haha!
Matt and I tried a new bar/grill called Sanford's Pub & Grub.  We chose it because their menu was quite extensive, and sounded soooooo good!
Well, it didn't disappoint!!  We decided to get some onion rings as an appetizer.  They were called "Brick & Onion Rings," but we didn't give it much thought.
Well, it made sense once they brought them out.  Check that thing out!!  And check out the grease on my napkin.  Yowza.
Matt ordered an apricot beer, and it was really good.  Would be great for summertime patio sipping!  I got a tall Moose Drool, and it was tasty, as usual.
Matt ordered a steak, which I didn't get a picture of.  I got the "Pants on Fire" burger platter.  The burger was smothered in hot wing sauce and bleu cheese.  The fries had cajun seasoning on them as well.  Ohmylordy was it ever delicious.  I'm drooling just thinking about it!
We finished up dinner, had a little ice cream at the Sonic Drive-Thru (yes, we are oh-so-romantic), stopped by Safeway to get some cash for the babysitter, and were home before 10 pm.  Sigh.
Sunday morning, I was woken up about 6 am by the sun coming through the windows.  It was a gorgeous day!  I got up, showered, and then the boys woke up.  We fed them breakfast, then headed out for Custar State Park around 9 am.
The first thing we did was drive the 18-mile wildlife loop through the park.  As soon as we entered the park, we got behind a giant buffalo, taking his sweet time on the road.  So cool.
I think we all enjoyed the donkeys the most.  They were standing right in the middle of the road, but moved as you approached them in your vehicle.  They weren't shy!!!
After we ended the wildlife loop, we found a picnic area at Center Lake and had lunch, then played on the beach for a short time.

Then, we packed back up and headed home.  We ended up going the wrong direction, and drove the entire Needles Highway, which I was irritated about at first, since going the wrong direction added at least 90 minutes to our drive, but it was so gorgeous.

With our unplanned detour, we were still able to be home by 2 pm.  The rest of the day was spent relaxing, playing outside, and moving most of the boys' outdoor toys off of our patio to make room for the addition that is to come this week!
I red my book, had some wine, and enjoyed the perfect springtime breeze.

The last picture is blurry and terrible, but pretty sums up what my weekend was all about.  Being a mom has just been the most amazing thing.  There are days where I lose my patience, that I think I'm going to scream, that I can almost feel my hair turning gray.  But every one of those moments is forgotten in about .264 seconds when I can giggle with, squeeze, and have an awesome time with my sweet boys.

I hope everyone has a great week!
