Weekly Goals - August 25-31

In the absence of my fitness posts, I've decided to start posting my weekly goals.  These can be related to work, personal life, fitness, etc.  If you're interested, you can still check out my workouts for last week here.

I really can't believe labor day is this coming weekend!  Where did summer slip off to?  Oh wait, It's making a last minute appearance here in western South Dakota, I forgot.  Anyone else experiencing a ridiculous heat wave where you are?

I'm very much in a fall-ish mood already.  I'm ready for the temps to cool down so I can start making soup and yummy pumpkin treats!  I've been feeling very restless lately, and want to start working on Christmas projects.  Heck, I'm already thinking about New Year's Resolutions!

So - without further adieu, here are my goals for this upcoming week!

1) Keep up on the laundry. 
Why, oh why does the stack of dirty laundry NEVER end???

2) Start sorting through, purging, consolidating, and selling the stuff in our garage with the intention to get rid of that expense ($50 a month) by the end of September.

3) Complete the To-Do list to get ready to rent out our house in Ohio.
This includes writing up a lease, adjusting the insurance, and finding a tenant.  Hopefully that last part won't be hard, as we currently have 4 people inquiring about it.

That's it for this week.  3 goals isn't very many, but they involve a decent amount of work, and they're important!  Getting rid of the $50/month expense of renting our garage along with getting most, if not all, of our mortgage covered is going to make all the world of difference for us!

Fitness 2013: August 11-17

Sunday the 11th marks the beginning of the second week of my 16-week plan to get buff!

That being said, I realize that some people really could give 3 and 1/2 craps less about my workout and healthy lifestyle.  That's cool - I totally respect that. 

I'm getting more and more "into" the health and fitness lately, so I've started another blog, dedicated solely to that part of my life.  If you're interested in following it, the address is

I've tried having two blogs before, and wasn't able to keep up with them both.  So I'll do my best.  The idea is to keep this one more for family, kids, and D related stuff, and post all the workout business on the other one.

Sunday 8/11 - REST

Monday 8/12 - 30 mins HIIT cardio + arms/shoulders/abs
Macros for the day: 47g fat, 133g carbs, 108g protein

Tuesday 8/13 - 3.52 miles on the tread + legs/obliques
Macros: 39g fat, 123g carbs, 93g protein
*This isn't quite accurate, because in making cupcakes for a work baby shower, I had quite a bit of icing....and maybe some cake batter.*

Wednesday 8/14 - 10 minutes exercise bike, at 20 mph + 20 minutes elliptical
Macros: way too much junk at the surprise baby shower for a co-worker.  As of 5 pm, macros were 32.2g fat, 81g carbs, 68g protein.....then I gorged.  Crap.

Thursday 8/15 - 30 mins HIIT cardio (treadmill) + arms/shoulders
Macros: didn't track accurately

Friday 8/16 - 30 minutes HIIT on the elliptical + Legs
Macros: didn't track accurately

Saturday 8/17 - REST - potty training.

Potty Training: Three-Day Method

I'm skeptical of any kind of "magical system" that's proven to work.  Not sure why, I just don't tend to buy into it.
However, I'm also not encouraged by the thought of dealing with diapers much longer.
So, that being said, I grasped at straws here with Mr. Little Stubborn Pants and gave the "Three-Day-Potty-Training-Method" a shot.

I scheduled myself off of work on Friday so that I could have a full 72 hours to be 100% potty-focused.  I prepared myself for exhaustion and frustration, with the hope that it just may not be too bad!

Matt took Hendrix to daycare on Friday morning, and after breakfast, I had Jameson go to the bathroom and get the remaining 5 (or so) diapers we had left and throw them in the trash.  We talked about how he wasn't going to wear diapers anymore because he was a big boy now, like daddy and Hendrix.

Once we did that, I threw away the diapers he was currently wearing and put his brand spanking new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle undies on him that he had proudly picked out by himself a few weeks prior.

He wasn't all about wearing a shirt, so this is basically what he looked like all day on Friday:

We kept a sippy full of juice (sugar free of course) with him all weekend to encourage peeing!
We were attached at the hip.  Everywhere he went, I went.  When I had to use the restroom, I asked him to come with me.  I basically didn't let him out of my sight.  This is part of the method.  Every time he started to pee, I whisked him to the bathroom and explained that pee pee goes on the potty, not in our undies.  Along with that, I told him about 735 times on Friday that when he needed to go potty, to tell mommy.
Needless to say, I cleaned up a LOT of puddles and soaked a few pairs of poopy underwear in water that day.  He did stay dry at naptime though.
The method recommends waking him an hour after bed and an hour before he normally wakes up.  I had good intentions with this part, I really did.  But it didn't happen, what can I say?  He had wet the bed when I checked his blood sugar at 1 am.  I changed his undies, he refused to try to go, so we went back to bed.  But when he woke up at 6 on Saturday, he was dry.

I was in serious kid-mode all weekend.  I play with my boys a lot, but I also expect them to play by themselves - as I feel like learning to take care of and entertain yourself is a very valuable life skill.  But I was all about playing with Jamers so I could keep an eye on him.  We played a lot of Legos and the game Memory. :)

Saturday morning, like I mentioned, he woke up dry.  I had him use the potty right away and he did great.  That morning, he was still starting to go pee in his undies sometimes, but by lunch time, he was starting to tell me!  He would dribble a bit before he released, and once he dribbled, he'd get a frantic look on his face and say "I go potty!" and then we'd race off to the bathroom.  Again - dry at nap time.
Saturday night, he woke up at some point in the night (I can't remember what time) and I had him use the potty and he did.  He woke up around 6 am damp, but not soaked, and used the potty again.
I don't remember what was happening here, but he sure thought he was hilarious.  I LOVE this picture.

Sunday morning, things had definitely turned a corner.  I was still reminding him to tell me when he needed to potty, but he was telling me, so I started to remind him a little less often.  In fact, he didn't have a single accident all day on Sunday.  He had to poop twice and made it to the potty both times.  I was so proud!!
I really wasn't sure if the method would work or not, but after my 72 hours of potty training, I'm definitely in agreement that it does!!

I fully expect him to have accidents in the coming weeks and months.  But that's normal.  Nobody's perfect - ever.  But especially when they're learning something new.

He's at daycare in underwear today, and his teachers seemed happy and proud of him for it, so I'm encouraged.  I sent about 7 spare pairs of undies and shorts - and a few pairs of socks - in case there are accidents.
It was a successful Potty-Training mission, and we are NOT looking back! :)
Sunday evening, I escaped by myself for about an hour and treated myself to a froyo.  Mmmmm, my favorite.

The Beautiful Black Hills (#4) - The Badlands

A really cool area of the Black Hills is the Badlands.
We decided to go on an overnight camping trip there this past weekend. 
The Badlands are named as such because three different tribes/cultures - without knowing about the others - all called them that due to their harsh nature and difficulty to travel through.
Our camping trip was enjoyable and I've gotta say, it was the coolest campsite backdrop I've ever had.  Check out the scenes we enjoyed!

The pictures don't begin to do the scenery the proper justice.  This was looking down into a giant canyon.  It made my heart race and gave me goosebumps.  That was a result of both my fear of heights and the sheer beauty.

Fitness 2013: August 4 - 10

Sunday 08/04 - Rest Day

Monday 08/05 - 3.65 miles on the tread + arms and shoulders (skipped abs)

Tuesday 08/06 - 30 minutes on the elliptical + legs and abs

Wednesday 08/07 - 3.65 miles on the tread + arms/shoulders

Thursday 08/08 - No AM workout, which felt ridiculously weird.  Went as a visitor to a Crossfit class with one of the ladies I ran with a few weeks ago.  Warm ups included inch worms, squats, and deadlifts.  My Visitor WOD was 5 sit-ups, 5 push-ups, 5 squats, and a 100 m dash.  The goal was to see how many of these sets I could do in 10 minutes.  I completed 9 + 12 reps (I got to 2 squats on the last set).

It was a cool experience.  But my honest opinion is that I don't really get all the hype about Crossfit.  I love to workout.  But I can YouTube crossfit workouts and time myself at the gym I already go to, without having to pay the crazy $100 a month fees to a Crossfit gym. 

But like I said, I did enjoy the workout, and more power to all the Crossfitters out there.  But I think I'll stick to my cardio and weight lifting on my own schedule. :)

Friday 08/09 - [10 minutes at 7.0 mph, 1.5% incline -- 5 minutes at 4.0 mph, 9.0% incline] x2 + core work (crunches, obliques, back, rows, etc.)

Saturday 08/10 - REST
I have a history of pushing myself too hard.  In my quest to lean out and build muscle, I have decided that I absolutely HAVE to listen to my body a little more.  If I push myself too hard, I'm going to burn out, be unhappy, and possibly even get sick.  My legs were incredibly sore after Crossfit followed by a run, and I was just plain tired.  I chose to sleep in (until Jameson woke up, of course) and feel rested so that I wasn't exhausted and grouchy for our camping trip that we had planned.

Miles for the Week: 10.3
Miles for August: 17.6
Miles for 2013: 314.36

I want to shift my cardio focus a little bit towards less endurance cardio, and more HIIT cardio.  From what I've read and studied (and that's a lot, lately), HIIT is the best way to burn fat, which is the main thing I'm after right now.

That being said, I hope to still get a few short runs in each week.  My mileage goal for 2013 is 400 miles, and I'm currently about 85 miles away from that.  I hope to still meet that goal, but my overall goals/desires have changed in the last few months, so I'm not sure I'll get there.  We will just have to see how the next few months play out.

The Beautiful Black Hills (#2)

Pizza!  Who doesn't love some good, greasy, delicious circle shaped carbohydrates??
The Pizza Ranch is a pizza franchise that starts somewhere in eastern Iowa, and I don't know how far west is stretches, but I remember seeing signs from Iowa all the way to Rapid when we made the initial drive here.
It was a few months after our arrival before we finally made it out to try it.  So delicious!
If you eat in, it's a pizza buffet, but they don't just have pizza.  One buffet is obviously pizza.  But they also have one with fried chicken, baked beans, potatoes, mac & cheese, etc.  Then there's the salad bar and a dessert bar.
Mmmmm, I'm drooling.  So tasty!

The Beautiful Black Hills (#1) - Dinosaur Park

Wondering what this post is all about?  Check out how I am challenging myself during the month of August!
There is no shortage of things to do for families in this area of the country!  One place that we have visited twice now is Dinosaur Park.
Not only is it fun for the boys to climb and play on the dinosaurs, it's a healthy workout for mom and dad, as there are about a million and a half stairs to climb!
The view from the top of the hill isn't too shabby either.

This is a free and fun activity, and is one reason that living in the Black Hills is ok!

I'm not sure what's a "good" weight for a woman on the leg press, but I did 240 lbs for 2 sets of 10 reps this morning!  Boom!  240 sounds like a good number, right?

Finally broke 300! Only 96 miles to go before December 31st to meet my 2013 mileage goal!

Personal Challenge: July Recap and August Challenge

My personal challenge in July was putting down the cell phone and eating healthier foods.

I think I did a fair job of both of those things.  There were many evenings where my cell phone didn't come out of my purse until 8:30 at night after the boys were tucked into bed.  I still found myself on it in the boys presence a couple of times - I'm not perfect and never will be.  But when they would ask me a question or try to engage with me, the cell phone went in my purse, pocket, whatever.

As for eating healthier, this is something I think I will always be striving to do.  I will never be perfect in this arena either.  But I've been focusing - especially in the last couple of weeks - on eating more lean protein, moderate carbs, and less fat.

Now, onto August!

Here's the deal: I miss living in Ohio very much.  I miss our house.  I miss our friends.  I miss pretty much everything about it.

Before we know it, August will be drawing to a close, we'll be celebrating Labor Day, and we'll be barreling into fall.  Fall is my most favorite season of the year.  I actually enjoy the fall season more than I do the Christmas season! (Even though I LOVE the holidays as well.) I have found myself thinking about how much I'm going to miss fall in Grand Rapids.  The bursts of yellow and red (there are a lot of evergreens out here in western South Dakota.), raking our front yard and letting the boys jump in the leaves, sitting on our front porch, going for cool weather runs through the friendly streets, fall and Halloween festivities, you get the idea.  I've had the same thoughts and feelings about the holiday season.

In fact, the other evening, I made a comment along the lines of "Ugh, the holidays are gonna suck this year," and Matt actually got upset with me and asked why I would say something like that.  It got me to thinking.

He was so right.  Why would I set myself up with a negative attitude like that?  If I go into both fall and the holiday season with a negative attitude, I'm pretty sure I'm guaranteed a negative experience, right?

So that brings me to my challenge for August.  Who has seen Joe Dirt?  I've found myself quoting the movie in the past few days by saying "I like to see homos naked."  Hehehehe.  If you haven't seen the movie, you have no idea what I'm talking about.  But the bottom line is:  we may be far away from our immediate family and loved ones.  But Rapid City, SD is home to us currently, and for however long we are supposed to be here.  It's obviously ok for me to miss living in Grand Rapids, OH.  But I shouldn't dwell on the fact that I'm homesick for it.

So in the month of August, instead of focusing on why I miss Ohio, I'm going to focus on why I enjoy living in the Black Hills.  It is my goal to share with you - at least once a week (hopefully more!) - something great about living in Rapid City, and in the area of the Black Hills.
