Personal Challenge: April 2013

I can't believe we're in the last few days of March already!  Do new months feel like new beginnings to anyone else?  I love flipping the page on the calendar and starting over every four weeks or so!!

For a few months now, and prompted even more so by Lent (I am not Catholic, by the way), I've felt like I should issue a challenge to myself, sort of like a "fast" of sorts.

The more I've thought about it, the more I like the idea of personally challenging myself with something each month.

I challenge myself physically everyday with my cardio sessions and workouts. I need to work - this month, at least - on more of a mental challenge. Self-control, I suppose.

I would like April 2013 to be the first of monthly challenges that I will issue to myself. I'm not doing this for anyone other than myself, but I'd like to share the challenges with you, for fun, and for accountability.

I went back and forth between two things for a couple weeks when deciding on my first self-challenge. After a lot of thought, I've decided to simply give up sweets after dinner for the month of April.

I'm health and weight-conscious. If you've followed this blog for any amount of time , you'll know this about me! I have a very active sweet tooth, and it's especially hyper in the evenings. My "rule" for this month's challenge, beginning on April 1, 2013, is that after dinner, I may have either a light yogurt cup or a piece of fruit. Nothing else. No cookies. No ice cream. No candy. No sugary drinks.

This is going to give my self-control quite a workout, but it needs it. In challenging myself this way, I hope to not only improve my self-control with food, but get more into the habit of making healthier choices with my food.

I won't be perfect. I will slip up. But I'm going to do my best, and I will share my experience with you. Feel free to issue yourself your own challenge, if you'd like, and join me in this journey!

Fitness 2013 (3/17-3/23)

This week was much better in terms of my workouts.  There were donuts and cookies a-plenty at work this week, and my self-control wasn't the greatest, but as long as I continue to drink my water and get my workouts in, I see no problem indulging in sweets occasionally.  What's life without any donuts or cookies, after all??

I'm so excited that the year is only a quarter of the way over, and I'm already over 100 miles!  If I keep this pace up, I can log 400 miles in 2013!

Bountiful Basket!

Matt and I always talk about how we need to eat more fresh foods and eat healthier.  I'm not sure why we don't do a better job of it, with him working for a produce warehouse and all!
Anyway, a couple co-workers of mine take part is what is called "Bountiful Baskets Co-Op."  It is where you get online each Monday morning at 9 am, mountain time, and you "participate."  By participating, you are clicking on your appropriate state, then county, then pick-up location, and buying one of these produce baskets.
The catch is that they sell out extremely fast!  I have been trying to get a Bountiful Basket for about four weeks, and I finally got one!  I logged onto the website at 8:57 am, and literally was hitting the refresh button about every 10-15 seconds.  (When I picked up my basket on Saturday morning, I learned that my specific site had sold out in four minutes!!)
Each site has a specific number of baskets available, and when they're gone, your site disappears from the list, and you know it's sold out.  The baskets cost $15, and you don't know specifically what you're going to get.  All you know is that it's 50% fruit and 50% vegetables.  There are also organic baskets, juice packs, and bread packs available for additional fees.  I stuck with the conventional produce basket for my first contribution.  My basket this week had asparagus (one of my favorite veggies!), broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and onions.  It also had mangos, apples, bananas, grapefruits, and tangerines.
Matt, being the produce guru, told me I could get the same amount of produce at the grocery store for about the same amount, give or take a few dollars.  Not sure if that's true, or he was just a grumpy gus about the whole idea. :)
Anyway, I walked in the door with this produce basket in my hands, and my boys literally attacked me, begging for some!  My boys LOVE fruit.  I'm always happy to give it to them, since it's nice and healthy.  Within 10 minutes of being home, we had demolished two apples, a grapefruit, and one of the mangos!
I cut up the broccoli and made broccoli and beef, like you get at a Chinese restaurant, on Sunday evening.  Saturday evening, we had roasted asparagus with our pasta.  I'm trying to decide what to do with the onions.  They'll last a while, but I want to eat them soon, just because they're delish!  Once I have more than two minutes at a time, I'm going to cook up the cauliflower and freeze some of it, and make a cauliflower "pizza crust" out of it, to see what all the fuss is about with that new fad recipe. 
Over all, I'm very happy with my Bountiful Basket, though I'm anxious to go to a grocery store and price out some produce to see if I saved money or not!  Once I find out, I'll let you know.  In the mean time, enjoy the photos of my yummy fresh produce!

It's only a short 9 to 10 week wait before swim suit season is in full force!!  I've been saying for a while now that I want to wear a bikini this summer, and I still hope to do that!

I need to really buckle down on ab and core work, but my weight is at a place that I'm satisfied with.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday - March, week 1

A few of the blogs I follow do weekly picture posts.  I'm bound and determined to actually complete a #photoaday month.  I figured I would combine the two, and just start doing Wordless Wednesday posts each week (I know I'm a day late this week....oops).
For those of you who aren't familiar with the #photoaday, there is a blog out there by fatmumslim, and she thought up this game/program/whatever you want to call it where she publishes a list each month of prompts to use and you take a picture each day, using her prompt for inspiration.  Then, you share your picture by whatever means you choose, whether it be facebook, twitter, instagram, blog, etc.
For my photos, I will try to just put the prompt, but there will be times where it needs a slight bit of extra explanation to make sense to anyone other than me!  So if you see a word or phrase followed by "....." then you know that the second part is just my explanation of the photo.

Dreams of summertime....

I'm so very ready for summertime.  Here are the things I am currently missing most about summer:

Warm temperatures! -- I have just about had it with these 30 degree highs and the ridiculous wind chills.  The wind out here in Rapid City is crazy!  Last night, for example, our apartment was 76 degrees, so we opened the window for a bit.  Matt and I were just sitting in the living room, all was quiet, and the very next second, you could barely see the building across the way due to the impromptu sandstorm that blew up.  Tonight, the winds are supposed to gust up to 60 mph.  Over it!


Summer clothes! -- I hope to make a few skirts in the weeks remaining before temps get (and stay) warm.  And I can't wait to break out shorts and flip flops on the weekends. 

Camping! -- We are currently without any kind of camper, but hopefully that will change soon.  I miss being at a campground, sitting around a fire, eating camping food, and letting the kids get absolutely filthy from playing in the dirt.

Grilling! -- Oh, what I wouldn't give for a grilled burger and corn on the cob, potato salad, and a cold glass of iced tea.  Summer food rocks.

Sitting on the patio! -- Matt and I LOVED to sit out on our front porch in the evenings after we got the boys to bed at the house in Ohio.  I'm sure - as long as we are still in the apartment complex - that we will do the same thing here.  I'm guessing watching the sun fall behind the hills is a fairly breathtaking thing to watch. :)

Getting outside to play! -- We are definitely cooped up and stir-crazy.  I'm ready to just let the boys run off crazy amounts of energy outside every evening, and on the weekends.

Sightseeing! -- We obviously live in a hugely tourist-driven area, but the only sight we've seen so far has been Mt. Rushmore.  We are waiting on warmer temps to venture out and see the other sights.

It's March, and that means only about 6 more weeks of cold temps.  Right now I feel like I can't stand another day of cold weather, let alone 6 more weeks, but I know it will pass quickly, as long as we keep busy.  Keeping busy is never a problem for us.

Our awesome weather weekend! (Mar 1-3)

I try to remember - on a regular basis - how blessed I really am.  But this weekend was one of those times that really reminded me of how lucky I am.  I don't need a gazillion dollars, or a house/garage full of expensive "items."  I have everything I need in my little testosterone-heavy family, and I wouldn't trade any of it for the world.
The weekend started out on such a happy note because we received these bad boys in the mail!!

After being without health insurance since January 4th, you can imagine how happy we were to finally be insured again!  We were definitely lucky not to have had any catastrophic things happed in those 6 weeks with Jamers.  Or Hendrix for that matter.  He isn't exactly Mr. Graceful.  Ha!
Friday evening, we did a whole lot of nothing.  I was going to make breakfast for dinner, but after a very long week at work for both Matt and I, we decided to bring home Little Ceaser's and just relax.  It was pretty great.
I started out Saturday with a 3.31 mile run OUTSIDE!  It was my first time running outside since we've been in Rapid City.  It felt darn good....while I was running.  Let me tell you, the Black Hills are no joke though!  My hips are very sore today!  I got this lovely view at the top of one of my hill-climbs.

As I was walking back up to the apartment after my run, I spotted about 6 bunnies hopping around the yard.  That, combined with the skunk we smelled while out on some errands today are sure signs pointing to spring! YAY!

Hendrix tends to sleep in until around 8 on the weekends, and I couldn't resist this adorable picture of him, still sacked out at 8 on Saturday morning.  He is just the most handsome man, I'm telling you what.  He's going to break some serious hearts some day.

The high on Saturday was supposed to be 55.  Once we all got showered and ready, we headed to one of the nicer parks in town.  So did about 10 other families. :)  The boys had a lot of fun playing, and the temps were gorgeous!

Saturday evening, Matt and I got out on a date for the first time in probably four months!  Matt has a co-worker who has a 17 or 18 year old daughter.  She graduated high school a semester early, and seems to really have it together.  I am quite impressed with her.  I was nervous about getting a sitter, of course, but we didn't go out until about 7:30, so we fed the boys dinner, and were able to dose Jameson for dinner, and also give him his evening Lantus dose.  All the sitter had to do was check his sugar at bedtime, and it was under 200, so we were happy with that.  The boys were wonderfully behaved, and she was happy to babysit them, and told us she'd come back any time.  Yay!
Matt and I went to the Firehouse Brewing Company.  It's one of the touristy-type restaurants downtown, but since we're still new to the area, we decided to check it out.  The food was average, but it was enjoyable.  We both ordered a beer sampler, and I finally admitted to myself that I enjoy dark beer now.  Crazy....

After dinner, we walked a couple blocks to Independent Ale House.  It was a really cool bar with a very "chill" atmosphere, which is exactly the type of bar we were looking for.  We each had 1 beer there, then headed home, because we couldn't think of anything else to do.  Haha.  We're so old!  It was a really enjoyable evening though.
On Sunday, we relaxed, and went for froyo after lunch.  I had bribed (yes, I admit it) Hendrix with ice cream if he behaved for RaeAnne (the babysitter) and stayed in bed when she told him it was bedtime.  He was perfect, so I held up my end of the bargain.  It was tough because, you know, froyo is just sooooo gross and everything. :D

Sunday afternoon, after nap/quiet time, we went outside for a little bit.  I snapped this picture of Jameson leaving our apartment.  He hates hats, but for some reason, insisted on wearing Hendrix's ball cap.  Cutest thing ever.

After playing outside, we had turkey burgers and tater tots for dinner, then just relaxed.  Matt finally joined the iphone world this weekend, so he and Hendrix played Angry Birds on his phone for a long time. 

I had my nightly snuggle hour with the J'ster, then put him to bed because he was getting way too grouchy.  But the difference in bedtime on this night was that I put Jameson to bed in the bottom bunk!!  He fell asleep in no time at all, and didn't give me any kind of difficulty.  I've been napping him on a cot instead of his crib for the past two weekends, and I just feel like it's time to grow him up a bit.  He's ready for a big boy bed, and it will make 2 AM sugar checks much easier on momma's back!
I truly enjoyed my three boys this weekend, and am in utter defiance of the fact that tomorrow is Monday.  But.....back to the grind, I guess.  I usually try to set some kind of goal for the week.  This week is just to eat healthy and not snack so dang much.  I've been doing a terrible job at that lately.
